Feeding Support Shouldn’t Start After Birth
Too often, breastfeeding begins in crisis. But it doesn’t have to.
Most families spend months preparing for birth, but almost no one explains to expectant parents how milk production works, what to do when breastfeeding hurts, when to pump, and how to support your mental health while breastfeeding.
Prenatal lactation support helps you start your feeding journey with a plan, instead of panic.
Lactation care can start during pregnancy, with education, preparation, and support already in place.
Why Prenatal Lactation Care?
When you meet with an IBCLC during pregnancy, you’ll receive the education and support needed to help you feel confident when your baby arrives.
Prenatal visits are completely personalized, but common topics include:
Three Ways to Get Prenatal Feeding Support
The families I work with choose one or more of these three options:
Free Live Virtual Prenatal Breastfeeding Class
“How Do I ACTUALLY Prepare for Breastfeeding? — Anxiety Edition”
This course offers practical preparation for anxious, overthinking, and neurodivergent parents.
Preparing for breastfeeding can quickly turn into reading everything, worrying about every possible problem, and still wondering whether you’re actually ready.
This new Anxiety Edition of my prenatal breastfeeding class takes the practical foundation of the original course and adds a more intentional focus on anxiety, neurodivergence, sensory needs, executive function, and reducing overwhelm.
In this free live prenatal class, we’ll focus on what you really need to know before baby arrives: what to expect in the first days, how milk production works, pumping basics, when to get help, and how to make a feeding plan that works for your brain, your nervous system, and your real life.
Especially helpful if you tend to overthink, feel anxious when you don’t know what to expect, get overwhelmed by too much information, or are ADHD, Autistic, or otherwise neurodivergent.
Single Prenatal Lactation Visit
A personalized prenatal visit where we talk through your goals, concerns, and plan for feeding your baby.
During a prenatal consultation, we can:
- Talk through your feeding goals
- Learn to use your pump and fit you for pump flanges
- Discuss colostrum collection before birth
- Review previous breastfeeding challenges
- Assess for low milk supply risk factors
- Create a postpartum feeding plan
Prenatal Lactation Consultation — $325
Virtual Prenatal Consultation — $150
For many families, one prenatal consultation provides exactly the individualized preparation they’re looking for. There is no commitment to ongoing care.
This can be especially useful if you have specific risk factors, a previous difficult feeding experience, anxiety about feeding, sensory concerns, or simply want a plan that is tailored to you instead of another generic breastfeeding class.
Ongoing Prenatal + Postpartum Support
For families who want expert guidance, continuity of care, and ongoing support—not just a single visit.
Many families book a package during pregnancy so we can create a plan, reserve their due date, and make sure support is already in place when baby arrives.
With a package, you receive:
- A personalized prenatal feeding plan
- Guaranteed availability for postpartum visits
- Priority scheduling
- Ongoing adjustments as feeding evolves
- Between-visit messaging support
- A familiar IBCLC who already knows your history, goals, and concerns
For families who feel especially anxious about feeding, are neurodivergent, have perinatal mental-health concerns, or have experienced a difficult feeding journey before, knowing exactly who you will call after birth can be a meaningful part of the support itself.
Not sure you need this level of care? You can always begin with a single prenatal consultation.
Not sure what you need yet?
Start with the free Breastfeeding Prep Checklist. It will help you think through what to expect, what may be specific to your body and baby, and what kind of support you want in place before the early weeks begin.
This support is for thoughtful, proactive parents who want to feel prepared, informed, and supported — not like they’re flying by the seat of their pants on 2.5 hours of sleep postpartum
Who Prenatal Breastfeeding Support is For
This care is for:
If you feel better when you understand what to expect and have an expert in your corner, prenatal lactation care can help you start feeding from a more confident, prepared place.
Why do families choose proactive prenatal care?
Lactation care is often reactive: families reach out only after feeding becomes painful, stressful, or overwhelming.
Prenatal lactation care gives us the opportunity to be proactive—understanding your individual risk factors, preparing for the early days, and building a feeding plan before you are recovering from birth and caring for a newborn.
For families choosing ongoing care, booking during pregnancy also allows you to reserve your due date and guarantees postpartum availability, so you already know who you’ll call when baby arrives.
Let’s begin this journey with intention.

Insurance, HSA, and Payment Information
Many families ask about insurance coverage for lactation visits.
While I do not bill insurance directly, many insurance plans will reimburse for lactation visits with an IBCLC. I provide superbills that you can submit for possible out-of-network reimbursement.
I also accept HSA and FSA cards, which many families use for prenatal and postpartum lactation visits and packages.
If you plan to use insurance reimbursement, I recommend calling your insurance provider and asking about their reimbursement rate for out-of-network lactation care.
FAQs
-
Most families schedule a prenatal visit for around 35-37 weeks, but it’s never too early to start planning. You can book your prenatal visit as early as you like in order to reserve a time around 35-37 weeks. Prenatal lactation support can be especially helpful if you are a first-time parent, had previous breastfeeding challenges, are planning to pump, have risk factors for lactation challenges (e.g. a history of breast surgery, thyroid disorder, insulin resistance, high blood pressure, or known infant health concerns), or just want to feel more prepared before your baby arrives.
-
Many feeding challenges can be prevented, or made much easier, with preparation during pregnancy. A prenatal lactation consultation helps you understand how milk production works, what to expect in the early days, and how to make a feeding plan so you’re not trying to figure everything out while recovering from birth and caring for a newborn.
-
That’s completely okay. Prenatal visits can include discussion of breastfeeding, pumping, and formula feeding, in order to help you make a plan that works for your family and your mental health.

Yes. Virtual visits are a great option if you live outside the Austin area.
-
Prenatal lactation support is especially helpful if you had low milk supply, painful latch, or other feeding challenges previously. We can review your history for concerns like thyroid dysfunction or history of breast surgeries and make a plan for this baby.
-
I recommend all families anticipating a cesarean birth or induction meet with a lactation consultant prenatally. Both c-sections and inductions can be risk factors for a delay in milk coming in. We can make a feeding plan specifically for these circumstances as well as for c-section recovery and the early postpartum period.
-
Yes, many families choose to learn hand expression and colostrum collection during pregnancy. During a prenatal visit, I can teach you how to safely collect and store colostrum and help you decide whether this is a good option for you.
-
If you had a positive previous experience, a refresher can be really supportive. If you had challenges before, a prenatal visit can help us make a different plan this time and set you up for a smoother experience.
