“I Wish I Had Met Her Before My Baby Arrived”: Why Lactation Care Doesn’t Have to Be Crisis Care
A client once wrote in a review:
“I wish I had met her before my baby arrived.”
I’ve been thinking about that line ever since.
Because so many families don’t reach out for lactation support until things feel urgent.
A painful latch.
A sleepy baby who won’t eat.
A pediatrician worried about weight gain.
Pump flanges causing severe nipple damage.
A feeding plan that suddenly feels impossible to maintain.
And of course, as an Austin lactation consultant, I can help in those moments. Many families reach out when breastfeeding is already painful, confusing, or emotionally overwhelming, and that support can make a huge difference.
But lactation care doesn’t have to be crisis care.
In fact, one of the most helpful things you can do before your baby arrives is make a clear, realistic feeding plan, not a rigid plan that assumes everything will go perfectly, but a practical one that helps you know what to expect, what to watch for, and when to ask for help.
That is where prenatal breastfeeding support can be incredibly valuable.
Why Think About Lactation Support Before Baby Arrives?
Many parents spend pregnancy preparing for birth, choosing baby gear, setting up the nursery, packing the hospital bag, and thinking through postpartum recovery.
But breastfeeding often gets filed under:
“I’ll figure it out when the baby gets here.”
And sometimes, that works.
But often, the first few days after birth are when feeding feels the most confusing. Your baby may be sleepy. Your milk is transitioning. You may be sore, tired, emotional, and unsure whether what you’re seeing is normal.
Questions can come up quickly:
Is my baby getting enough?
How often should my baby be feeding?
Is this latch supposed to hurt?
Should I pump?
Do I need to supplement?
When should I call for help?
What should my partner or support person be doing?
A prenatal feeding plan gives you a clearer sense of what to expect before you are in the middle of it.
What Is a Prenatal Feeding Plan Session?
A Prenatal Feeding Plan Session is a focused prenatal lactation visit where we talk through your feeding goals, your questions, your concerns, and what support may actually make sense for your family after birth.
This is not about creating a rigid plan or pretending you can control every detail of infant feeding.
It is about helping you feel more prepared, less alone, and more able to recognize when things are going well — and when it is time to get support.
During a prenatal feeding plan session, we may talk about:
what to expect in the first 72 hours after birth
how often newborns feed
signs that feeding is going well
when to ask for help
what painful latch can mean
what to know about colostrum and milk coming in
pumping and bottle questions
flange sizing and pump setup, especially during in-home visits
how partners or support people can help
your personal risk factors, concerns, and goals
whether ongoing postpartum lactation support would be helpful
For Austin-area families, I offer both virtual prenatal breastfeeding support and in-home prenatal lactation visits.
Who Benefits From Prenatal Breastfeeding Support?
A prenatal feeding plan session can be helpful for many families, especially if you:
want to breastfeed but feel nervous about the early days
had a hard breastfeeding or pumping experience before
are hoping to avoid unnecessary triple feeding or panic pumping
want a plan for pumping, bottles, or going back to work
have anxiety and want fewer unknowns
want your partner or support person to understand how to help
want support that is evidence-based, compassionate, and realistic for your actual life
You do not need to have a “problem” to get lactation support.
You do not need to wait until breastfeeding hurts.
You do not need to wait until you are exhausted, overwhelmed, and searching online in the middle of the night.
When Should You Book a Prenatal Lactation Visit?
Prenatal Feeding Plan Sessions are usually most helpful around 35–37 weeks, when birth is close enough that the plan feels real, but there is still time to ask questions, talk through your options, and make decisions before baby arrives.
But you do not have to wait until 35 weeks to reach out.
You can reserve your session earlier in pregnancy for later in your third trimester. And if you are hoping for support after birth, connecting prenatally can make that support much easier to access later — because we have already talked through your goals, your concerns, and what kind of care would actually feel helpful for your family.
This is especially valuable if you know you would like continuity of care from pregnancy into postpartum.
Virtual and In-Home Prenatal Lactation Support in Austin
I offer two options for Prenatal Feeding Plan Sessions:
Virtual Prenatal Feeding Plan Session
60 minutes
A focused virtual session for families anywhere who want a personalized feeding plan before baby arrives.
In-Home Prenatal Feeding Plan Session
75 minutes
A more hands-on option for families in Austin and surrounding areas who want personalized preparation in their own home. This can include pump setup, flange sizing guidance, and practical planning for the space and support you will actually have after birth.
If you decide within 7 days of your Prenatal Feeding Plan Session that you would like ongoing postpartum lactation support, the full cost of your session can be applied toward any lactation support package.
Lactation Care Can Start Before the Spiral
So many parents wait until feeding feels hard to ask for help.
But you are allowed to get support before you are in crisis.
You can make a plan before your baby arrives.
You can know what to expect in the first few days.
You can understand when things are normal and when they are not.
You can know who to call if things feel confusing later.
Breastfeeding does not have to begin with panic, pain, or guesswork.
And lactation care does not have to be crisis care.
